Champagne_(beverage)

Champagne is a sparkling wine produced by inducing the secondary fermentation of wine. It is named after the Champagne (province)|Champagne region of France. While the term "champagne" is often used by makers of sparkling wine in other parts of the world, such as California and Canada, it should properly be used to refer only to the wines made in the region of Champagne, France. The community, under the auspices of the Comit? Interprofessionel du Vin de Champagne has developed a comprehensive set of rules and regulations for all wine that comes from the region. These rules are designed to ensure that the highest quality product is produced and include a codification of the most suitable places for grapes to grow, the most suitable types of grapes ? all Champagne is produced from one or a blend of three varieties of grapes: chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier ? and has identified a lengthy set of requirements that specify most aspects of viticulture. This includes vi! ne pruning, the yield of the vineyard, the degree of pressing applied to the grapes, and the time that bottles must remain on the lees. Only if a wine meets all these requirements may the name Champagne be placed on the bottle. The rules that have been agreed upon by the CIVC are then presented to the INAO for final approval. In Europe and most other countries, the name "champagne" is Protected designation of origin|legally protected to mean only sparkling wine produced in its namesake region and adhering to the standards defined for that name as an ''Appellation d'Origine Contr?l?e''. Even the term ''m?thode champenoise,'' or ''champagne method'' is, as of 2005, forbidden in favor of ''m?thode traditionelle''. There are sparkling wines made all over the world, and many use special terms to define their own sparkling wines: Spain uses ''Cava'', Italy calls it spumante, and South Africa uses ''Cap Classique''. A sparkling wine made from Muscat grapes in Italy uses the Denom! inazione di Origine Controllata|DOCG ''Asti''. In Germany, Sek! t is a c ommon sparkling wine.
Other sparkling wines not from Champagne sometimes use the term "sparkling wine" prominently on their label. While most countries have labeling laws that protect wine producing locations such as Champagne, some ? including the United States ? continue to allow U.S. wine producers to utilize the name “Champagne” on the label of products that do not come from Champagne. To allow this practice, the U.S. Congress passed a law claiming that the term "Champagne" is semi-generic. This often leads to consumer confusion about genuine Champagne and is seen as deceptive by some consumers and wine experts. While some U.S. companies ironically claim that their long usage of the term prevents them from dropping the word ''champagne'' on the bottle, many quality U.S. sparkling winemakers have ceased use of the term, instead favoring "sparkling wine" as their identifier.Champagne's sugar content varies. The sweetest level is doux (meaning sweet), proceeding in order of increas! ing dryness to demi-sec (half-dry), sec (dry), extra sec (extra dry), brut (almost completely dry), and extra brut / brut nature / brut zero (no additional sugar, sometimes ferociously dry.).

Phenylalanine

The alpha-amino acid Phenylalanine exists in two forms, the ''D''- and ''L''- forms, which are enantiomers (mirror-image molecules) of each other. It has a benzyl side chain. Its name comes from its chemical structure consisting of a phenyl group substituted for one of the hydrogens in the side chain of alanine. Because of its phenyl group, phenylalanine is an aromatic compound. At room temperature, it is a white, powdery solid.
''L''-Phenylalanine (LPA) is an electrically neutral amino acid, one of the twenty common amino acids used to biochemically form proteins, coded for by DNA. Its enantiomer, ''D''-phenylalanine (DPA), can be synthesized artificially.''L''-phenylalanine is used in living organisms, including the human body, where it is an essential amino acid. ''L''-phenylalanine can also be converted into ''L''-tyrosine, another one of the twenty protein-forming amino acids! . ''L''-tyrosine is converted into L-DOPA, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. ''D''-phenylalanine can be converted only into phenylethylamine. The genetic disorder phenylketonuria is an inability to metabolize phenylalanine. The synthesized mix DL-Phenylalanine (DLPA), which is a combination of the D- and L- forms, is used as a nutritional supplement.Phenylalanine is part of the composition of aspartame, a common sweetener found in prepared foods (particularly soft drinks, and gum). Due to phenylketonuria, products containing aspartame usually have a warning label stating that they contain phenylalanine, in compliance with U.S. Food and Drug Administration|FDA guidelines. The genetic codon for phenylalanine was the first to be discovered. Marshall W. Nirenberg discovered that, when he inserted ''m''-RNA made up of multiple uracil repeats into ''E. coli'', the bacterium produced a new protein, made up solely of repeated phenylalanine amino acids.Phenylalanine uses the same acti! ve transport channel as tryptophan to cross the blood-brain ba! rrier, a nd in large quantities interferes with the production of serotonin.

After doing an Amazon search of the word "arthrogryposis", I found Goodwin Hale's book.I am a mother of a son with this condition and so I was interested in reading about Mr. Hale's life. His story is really inspirational and I was constantly stopping to read my husband excerpts from this book. The writing is lively and he has many amusing antecdotes about his growing up years.I am anxious to have my son read it.He is 15 and I think he will be able to relate to Mr. Hale's stories, although he did not grow up in a small town during the depression as Mr. Hale did. Despite the generational difference, his daily life as someone with arthrogryposis will be familiar to anyone with this condition. I would highly recommend his book for anyone with a loved one with this condition- they will be inspired by Mr. Hale.I would also recommend this book to anyone who just wants a positive read, many smiles and inspiration of someone that had difficult challenges from birth.

Arthrogryposis

Arthrogryposis (Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita) is a muscle disorder that causes multiple joint contractures at birth. A contracture is a limitation in the range of motion of a joint. In some cases, few joints may be affected and the range of motion may be nearly normal. In the "classic" case of arthrogryposis, hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, feet and knees are affected. In the most severe cases, nearly every body joint may be involved, including the jaw and back. Frequently, the contractures are accompanied by muscle weakness, which further limits movement. Arthrogryposis is relatively rare, occurring in approximately one in 3,000 births. In most cases, arthrogryposis is not a genetic condition and does not occur more than once in a family. In about 30% of the cases, a genetic cause can be identified. The risk of recurrence for these cases varies with the type of genetic disorder. Research has shown that anything that prevents normal joint movement before birth ! can result in joint contractures. The joint itself may be normal. However, when a joint is not moved for a period of time, extra connective tissue tends to grow around it, fixing it in position. Lack of joint movement also means that tendons connecting to the joint are not stretched to their normal length; short tendons, in turn, make normal joint movement difficult. (This same kind of problem can develop after birth in joints that are immobilized for long periods of time in casts.) In general, there are four causes for limitation of joint movement before birth: * Muscles do not develop properly (atrophy). In most cases, the specific cause for muscular atrophy cannot be identified. Suspected causes include muscle diseases (for example, congenital muscular dystrophies), maternal fever during pregnancy, and viruses, which may damage Cell (biology)|cells that transmit nerve impulses to the muscles.
* There is not sufficient room in the uterus for normal movement. For example, the mother may lack a normal amount of amniotic fluid, or have an abnormally shaped uterus.
* Central nervous system and spinal cord are malformed. In these cases, a wide range of other conditions usually accompanies arthrogryposis.
* Tendons, bones, joints or joint linings may develop abnormally. For example, tendons may not be connected to the proper place in a joint.

This book, as far as I know, is the first to focus on the anonymous warriors of feudal Japan. Turnbull does an excellent job of shedding light on the class of warriors that bore the brunt of fighting during sengoku jidai. He covers everything from arms and armor, how the farmer/soldiers were mobilized in time of war, to life on campaign and medical treatment for wounded soldiers. He also shows how ashigaru went from being despised underlings to finally being granted the social status of samurai under Hideyoshi, who himself started his military career as an ashigaru. All of this in 64 pages. Well worth the money.

Ashigaru

The Japanese ''ashigaru'' (足軽) were infantry|foot-soldiers of medieval Japan. During Muromachi period, ashigaru were employed by the shogun as his personal army.

Origins

Their root is believed to be that of ''shimobe'' (下部), who served by the side of government officials during Heian period. Ashigaru (literally "light-foot", but the word most likely stems from "light armored") were the lowest-class warriors, either the low-class ''buke'' (noble) or commoners who had joined or been impressed to the daimyo's army. There are also stories about female ashigaru, though it is unlikely that they served in the frontline duty.At first the ashigaru were mercenary|mercenaries or adventurers who were paid only in loot, but eventually some of them became part of local armies as retained warriors. Those who were given control of ashigaru were called ''ashigarugashira'' (足軽頭), (literally "ashigaru head"), and were provided with an ann! ual stipend of 200 to 500 koku.

Usual equipment and Armanent

The ashigaru were foot soldiers—the cavalry was the territory of the samurai. They might have been armed with katana or just with spears (''yari'') unless they served as handlers of catapults. In the 1500s, they were also armed with arquebuses. As battles became more complex and forces larger, ashigaru were rigorously trained so that they would hold their ranks in the face of enemy fire. Their armor consisted of conical hats (''jingasa'') made of lacquered hardened leather, breastplates and occasionally greaves protecting the legs. Some also donned small banners on their back during battle for identification purposes, called ''sashimono''. They needed to bring provisions for themselves until reaching local gathering points and from this point on, were provided provisions from daimyo's warehouses.

Service in war

In the Onin War, ashigaru gained a reputation as unruly troops when they looted and ! burned Miyako (modern-day Kyoto). In the following Sengoku per! iod some of them rose to greater prominence. The most famous of them was Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who also raised many of his warrior followers to samurai status. Yamauchi Katsutoyo was one of such samurai and later daimyo who rose from ashigaru.

New weapons, new tactics

Ashigaru formed the backbone of samurai armies in the later periods. The real change for the ashigaru, as an important part of any samurai army, ocurred with the introduction of guns from foreign traders, such as the Portuguese, in mid 16th century. Almost imediatly local warlords, (Daimyo), started to equip their ashigaru with this new weapon that required little training to use proficiently, as compared to the japanese longbow which took many years to learn. The advantage of the new powerful ranged weapon would prove revolutionary to samurai warfare. This would be demonstrated at the battle of Nagashino in 1575, where carefully positioned ashigaru with muskets were to thwart repeated heavy cavalry charges by th! e Takeda against the Oda clans defensive lines and break the back of the Takeda war machine. After the Battle of Nagashino, the ashigarus role in the warlords armies were cemented as a very powerful compliment to the samurai. In the two invasions of Korea in 1592 and 1597 the advantages would again be shown and utilized when engaging the koreans, and later the chinese, in battle.

Gaikokujin

''Gaikokujin'' (外国人 "Alien (law)|foreigner" lit. "outside country person") is a Japanese language|Japanese word used to refer to foreigners. ''Gaijin'' (外人 lit: "outside person") is a separate word. Some claim it originally meant "outsider" or "enemy." Others claim it is no more than a contraction of ''gaikokujin''. This term is usually used to describe white (caucasian) foreigners rather than foreigners of a non-Japanese Asian background. The more formal term hakujin (白人, literally "white person") is also used to specify people of an Anglo Saxon, Celtic or European background. This contrasts with ''t?y?jin'', (東洋人, literally, "oriental (east ocean) person"), the name the Japanese use to describe their own race.

Aikido

Aikido (合気道 ''Aikidō'', also 合氣道 using an older style of kanji), literally meaning "harmony energy way", or with some poetic license, "way of the harmonious spirit", is a gendai budo — a modern Japanese martial art. Practitioners of aikido are known as aikidoka. It was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (植芝盛平) (also known by aikidoka as o-sensei (大先生)) over the period of the 1930s to the 1960s. Technically, the major parts of aikido are derived from Daito Ryu|Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu (大東流合気柔術), a form of jujutsu with many joint techniques, and kenjutsu (剣術), or Japanese sword technique (some believe especially the tactics in Aikido is influenced by Yagyu Shinkage Ryu|Yagyū Shinkage Ryū). Aikido is also considered to contain a significant spiritual component.
